Why the same sale pays out differently on each platform (as of Oct 2026)
Comparing headline rates (8%, 13.6%, 20%, 10%, 0%) is misleading, because each platform charges its fee on a different base. Some charge on the item only. Some charge on the item plus shipping. Some charge on everything the buyer paid, including sales tax. Fixed per-order fees also make cheap items far more expensive to sell than the percentage suggests.
What each platform charges on
- Whatnot: commission of 8% at the Standard tier (4% for coins, lower at higher volume tiers) on the item price only, plus 2.9% + $0.30 processing on item + shipping + tax.
- eBay: 13.6% in most categories on item + shipping + tax, plus $0.30 or $0.40 per order. Trading cards are 13.25%; sneakers of $150+ are 8% with no per-order fee.
- Poshmark: $2.95 under $15, 20% at $15 and up, on the item price only. Processing is included.
- Mercari: 10% on item + buyer-paid shipping, with no processing fee.
- Depop: 0% selling fee in the US, with 3.3% + $0.45 processing on item + shipping + tax.
How this comparison treats shipping
To keep it fair, the comparison treats shipping the same way on every platform. The shipping the buyer pays counts as money in, and your label cost counts as money out. On platforms where the buyer’s shipping payment buys the label directly (Whatnot, Poshmark and Mercari prepaid labels), your actual payout won’t include either amount, but your profit comes out the same. Profit is the number to compare.
What usually wins
- Clothing and everyday items: Depop’s low processing-only fee usually leaves the most, with Mercari and Whatnot close behind. Poshmark’s 20% is the most expensive above $15, though its built-in buyer traffic and shipping can still make it worth it.
- Trading cards and collectibles: Whatnot’s 8% on the item only usually beats eBay’s 13.25% on the full order. Above $1,500, Whatnot’s 0% commission on the excess widens the gap.
- Sneakers of $150+: eBay’s 8% with no per-order fee is competitive.
- Very cheap items: fixed fees dominate. Poshmark’s $2.95 and eBay’s $0.30 hit hardest.
Fees are only one part of the decision. Sell-through speed, buyer demand, returns and the time each listing takes also decide where an item belongs. Use the category menu to switch the Whatnot vertical and eBay category, then try a few price points. The winner often changes around $15 and again in the hundreds.
