How Mercari seller fees work (as of Oct 2026)
Mercari US charges sellers one main fee: a 10% selling fee. Since January 6, 2025 there has been no separate payment processing fee for listings created or updated on or after that date. The old 2.9% + $0.50 processing charge is gone; instead, buyers pay a separate Buyer Protection fee, which doesn’t come out of your payout.
What the 10% is charged on
The selling fee is 10% of the item price plus any buyer-paid shipping. Sales tax is not included. On a $50 item where the buyer pays $7 for shipping, the fee is 10% of $57, or $5.70, not $5.00. This is the most common reason a Mercari payout looks a little smaller than expected.
How shipping affects your payout
Mercari gives you two main options:
- The buyer pays shipping. The buyer’s shipping payment buys the prepaid label, so you never receive it, but the 10% still applies to it. Keep “Buyer’s shipping buys the label” ticked in the calculator.
- You pay shipping. The label cost is deducted from your earnings. Untick the box, set buyer-paid shipping to 0, and enter the label price as your shipping cost. Mercari publishes its label prices in a table (a new one takes effect October 19, 2026; for example, USPS Priority up to 1 lb is listed at $8.99).
Other Mercari costs to know about
- Payouts: a standard direct deposit is free ($2 if a deposit fails). Instant Pay costs $3.
- Cancellation fee: sellers who cancel often can be charged 5% of the item price, up to $25.
- Authentication: $5 to list in the authenticated program and $10 for a certificate, where offered.
None of these are included in the calculator because they don’t apply to every sale. If you use Instant Pay, subtract $3 from your profit per payout, not per sale.
Is Mercari cheaper than other platforms?
Often, for mid-priced items. With no processing fee, 10% of item plus shipping usually beats Poshmark’s 20%, and is close to or below eBay’s 13.6% of the whole order including tax. For live-sale sellers, Whatnot’s 8% plus processing can come out similar. The comparison calculator runs one sale through every platform side by side.
Rates are from Mercari’s help center (fee article last updated May 7, 2026). Some blogs say the processing-fee change happened in 2026, but the official date is January 6, 2025.
